Extraction of basic materials

In this section, ČBK brings together members active in the field of extraction of basic materials to produce battery cells. Battery cells for storing electrical energy exist in different forms with different contents. They always have in common that they need quite a few basic materials, especially minerals, for production. The competence of the members in this section includes: mineral extraction, production and purification of precursors for the production of electrode materials, connection with secondary production (recycling) and the overall legislative framework.

Materials to produce batteries

In this section, the CBK brings together members working at the level of processors of mined minerals to produce materials needed for production of battery cells, or suppliers and distributors of these materials. The competences of the members include the production of electrode material/s, the production of solvents and salts for the electrolyte, the production of separators, the production of electrode materials for water-based accumulators, or materials for accumulators of the next generation.

Battery production

In this section, ČBK brings together members operating at the level of manufacturers of individual battery cells. These manufacturers are no longer necessarily located in Asia, as was the case for the most part in the first two decades of the 21st century, as factories for the production of lithium-based battery cells, so-called gigafactories, are currently growing at a great pace in individual countries in Europe as well. The competence of the members in this sector lies in the know-how of preparation of electrode pastes and application, assembly of cells and their formatting, automation of production and testing of accumulators according to standards and specific application requirements.

Production of modules and BMS

In this section, ČBK brings together members who manufacture battery control electronics, the so-called „Battery Management System“ or „BMS“ for short, and secondly the so-called „integrators“, i.e. entities dealing with the assembly of individual battery cells into and from modules possibly into overall battery systems including BMS equipment. The competence of the members in this section is the production of modules and their encapsulation, the production of BMS and temperature management of battery containers (heating and/or cooling), the prediction of the behaviour and lifetime of the assembled batteries in the required applications.

Electromobility and ESS

In this section, ČBK brings together members involved in the development and research of customer applications for new batteries, both in the field of (electro-)mobile applications and in the field of stationary storage of electrical energy in batteries – the so-called „Energy Storage System (ESS)‘ or ‚Battery Energy Storage System (BESS)‘. Electromobility is not only the transport of electric personal vehicles, i.e. cars with an electric drive, but also includes public transport vehicles (wheeled and rail), air, sea and work/machine mobile vehicles. In terms of the amount of stored energy, battery storage ranges from small personal home storage with the size of low units of kWh to industrial container storage with energy in units or tens of MWh, used, for example, to stabilize the transmission network.

Safety and storage

In this section, ČBK brings together members specializing in the issue of safe handling of battery systems, including their storage. Whether they are classic lead-acid batteries or the currently widespread lithium-based battery cells, these products require safe handling and storage. Members‘ competences in this area include knowledge of storage systems, fire extinguishing systems, smart cell diagnostics and the overall legislative framework.

Battery second-life

In this section ČBK brings together members dealing with existing batteries at the end of their standard life with the aim of their second use in the form of deployment in applications often with lower performance requirements. This competence includes diagnostic methods to determine the suitability of a particular battery for the next application, production/mechanical reworking of the battery into a new form if the application requires it, lifetime prediction including life cycle optimization and the overall legislative framework.

Recycling

In this section, ČBK brings together members dealing with batteries at the end of their useful life with the aim of reusing the materials contained in them and ecologically disposing of items that cannot be reused. This competence includes the know-how of deactivation of discarded accumulators, recycling of electrode materials, reuse of materials and the overall legislative framework.
